Yesterday my brother’s dog Benny died, for those of you that can relate , that fur baby was my sweet nephew. He was a beautiful boxer over ten years old and Benny recently had a loss of his own longtime companion.

After some decsion-making and angst on the part of the whole family they were ready to return to being a 2 dog family. An appropriate amount of time for grieving had passed and next we heard that a rambunctious rescue pup was adopted into the fold. Bo seemed to rally his spirits and to lend graciously to a project while continuing to deeply mourning the loss of his friend. Benny taught the pup all good things, Elder wisdom and how to be a good pup in a sea of old dogs… ready to take the baton at just the right time.

I knew he was sad, I knew he was tired, but I didn’t know he was sick, achy and a bit contrary and more importantly quite ready. I just heard he was sleeping a lot and napping, which was what my own brother liked to do most days anyway since he was retired and mostly done.

Yesterday my brother posed & posted that Benny was in heaven and since I often think poetically and figuratively, I thought “how sweet”. I could see the resemblance, twin soul mates, both with grey beards….life well lived and pride and and gentle rest and peace beyond all understanding. I usually get a pic text…
