Any poet or artist has to cultivate the kind of attention that dissolves cliches and assumptions, that re-examines labels, because underneath the ready prescriptions are more fundamental issues. Rilke advises us to ‘live the questions.’ That’s very different from living the answers. One state keeps the mind open and alive and one closes it.
