As soon as I saw this assignment aka writing prompt to talk about my confrontations with new technologies… I knew I wanted to talk about the “new to me” screaming technology of QR (Quick Response) Codes and the link with the ability to scan and capture all sorts of information not only with optical scanners in grocery stores, retail establishments, but the capability and necessity to capture information with our smart phones everywhere even in our home on TV screens, monitors on appliances and computer; I was both fascinated and annoyed with the technology and worried incessantly about privacy as well as what information other than the product or purchase was the QR Code capturing.

At my church we used QR codes to collect tithes, offerings and contact information for COVID, mailing lists and even birthday greetings. Folks can no longer received a church bulletin or a program or even a menu. You scanned the QR CODE and the information was sent or captured to your personal hand held device. Nostalgia and paper records were immediately eliminated changing the way we kept records and interacted.

In terms of Records and Information Management, this was again not just emerging technology designed for one automotive warehousing industry; but a game changer in capturing information, creating a record, storing it electronically, preserving and discarding the records with built in recovery and retention while…
