So grateful for the dialogue... such good conversation while moving away from either /or (sorry for pun of black and white ) thinking. These events like gun violence is both simple and very complex to experience and worst to watch. I am struck by that in Memphis.. a city and space with such an incredible history of contributing to the narrative of the civil rights movement; this is the place where we witnessed the beat down. Home of vigilante mob violence. Home of MLK prophetic oratorical genius. Home of a place where no black man might expect to get a good government job with fair wages earning the public trust. For this one black man/ looking up from the ground & seeing five black faces provided him with no comfort. Were we taught somewhere that seeing someone who looked like us assured our humanity and that we might be safe. Race is a factor; but not the only factor and now we are willing to take a closer look. No mother wants to imagine that their son could grow up & be any one of those young men. The truth though is that some mothers know what their son is capable of...what should they do? What happens/happened in Memphis has long term effects for us everywhere. Illuminate us on what we might learn here. I so love your perspective.
