Thank you William. Nice work on making old stories come alive from the archives. This one hits home on many levels for me. The summer of 1919 was a tough year after the Great War . My father in law was from Waldo, Florida and shortly before planning to retire there , he passed away but not before alluding to the fact that having to leave was very hard but probably saved his life . He like many elders of the time were short on details in wanting to protect the children ; he spoke of its proximity to Disney world and orange trees. I was not aware of the contextual framework of violence so related to election cycles local and national. Imagine the boldness to publish the letter in the local newspaper and make it clear that law enforcement could not protect you.. we have been in this place before. Fascinating and compelling. … appreciate your scholarship as you once again connect the dots.
